Safety Shoutout
This month's Safety Shoutout goes to Erasmo Perera! Erasmo has been with FIU's Department of Biological Sciences for the past 12 years. His responsibilities include management of the shared research facilities and teaching labs within the department, as well as of the Tissue Culture Core Facility (TCCF). Additionally, he supervises the daily operations of the biology stockroom, which handles the preparation of all biology teaching labs at MMC. These duties require an active role in securing a safe environment for TCCF users, biology stockroom staff, students, instructors, and himself. Erasmo has significant accomplishments in his time at FIU, which includes: - Restoration of the TCCF as an essential resource for the operations of the biology teaching labs and the FIU research community. - Renovation or improvement of teaching labs and the Owa Ehan biology stockroom, as well as other research and office spaces within the Department of Biological Sciences. - Implementation of a nitrile glove recycling program and other sustainability initiatives in several biology labs. Laboratory safety is a priority for the biology stockroom. The stockroom team works closely with the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to ensure a safe environment for students in teaching labs. Erasmo has worked closely with departmental administration, principal investigators, and EH&S to improve and enforce the compliance of research labs with disposal procedures for chemicals and equipment, particularly during laboratory closeouts. Apart from working in the lab, he greatly enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with FIU graduate students and others in the university community.
